I got bit by the Ubuntu bug.
It seems to come around every major revision or so. A few days ago in my daily reading I came across a news item saying that Feisty Fawn (Ubuntu 7.04) came out. This started the cogs in head going again.
Ever since I first heard of Ubuntu I've wanted to install it. Downloading and burning the software is easy enough. Even running the LiveCD worked pretty well. There were a few things that weren't working while on the LiveCD so I figured if I could install it onto my system I could give it the full evaluation. Keep in mind, I need to dual boot WinXP so I'll be going through the re-partition song and dance.
The first time I tried this, about 6 months ago or so, I used the Ubuntu partition manager during the installation to resize my windows partition and throw in the necessary partitions for Ubuntu. I can't recall exactly what I specified but I do specifically remember after rebooting that Windows had gone belly-up and I spent the next day at work re-installing all my oracle software and dev tools.
This time I decided to do my research (go figure). I found some interesting and not so interesting things. I even found an instructional video, but once those opening riffs of eye of the tiger started up I knew it was time to bail. Next I found a tutorial by Matthew Miller. It's a little dated but the important part came from the Linux System Rescue CD. The partition app in there, GParted, worked like a charm. After I ran through that, I installed Ubuntu, and off I went. I did have to alter the Windows boot file to allow me to boot to the Ubuntu partition but that alteration ended up working just fine. I'm sure it's not as robust as a GRUB install but it works for me.
