- The Beatles - And I Love Her
- Randy Brooks - Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer
"And I Love Her" is focusing on barre chord changes between the different shapes and frets. "Grandma..." is mainly just a fun holiday song that strengthens a couple of barre chord shapes (especially Bb). Also, it's not noted on the sheet but "Grandma..." can be strummed with the classic rock strum (down down up up down) or straight (up down up down).
It's been fun, see you next term.
We were talking about Bon Iver in class the other day. He ran into the snowy northlands, secluded, and came back with a bunch of hauntingly beautiful songs. Here's my favorite from his Blood Bank EP.
This week we got Annie's Song by John Denver. It's pretty straight forward but has an emphasis on moving between the F barre chord and other chords. It's also in 3/4 time so pay attention to the strum pattern in the upper right.
Next week is the last week for this semester. Registration is open for next semester. Acoustic Guitar 5 is offered at the same time and place as this semester.
That said here's the music for this week:
Week 8 Sheet Music - [PDF]
- Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller - Kansas City
- Carole King - You've Got A Friend
Note:Don't follow the fingering for the Gmaj7 on "You've Got A Friend", they use a very unusable shape. Instead, finger a regular G, lift the pinky, and use your index on the 2nd fret high E string.
Oh, and don't forget to use a swing strum on "Kansas City"
Take a break from those barre chords and get ready for some Blues. Get your fill of bends, slides, hammer-ons, pull-offs, and vibrato. All in one lick. It's short but dense, like a musical pound cake.
Since we didn't have a full song this week I'll just post a video of Muddy Waters at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960 playing "Hoochie Coochie Man".
Ruby Tuesday - The Rolling Stones
Along with the song is a sheet explaining the root 5 major barre chord. Otherwise known as the "oh god, how can I get my ring finger to do that?" chord. This is used on the B flat in the last line of the sheet music. The following F chord can also be played as a barre chord.
Week 6 Sheet Music - [PDF]
I realize there's no guitar in this video clip but I like the look of vintage Mick & Keith
"Every guitar player should play acoustic at home. No matter what else you do, if you don't keep up your acoustic work you're never going to get the full potential out of an electric, because you lose that touch."
- Keith Richards
Brendon Small is one of my idols. He started playing guitar when he was 13, got a degree from Berklee College of Music, and went on to create Metalocalypse. He's funny and incredibly musically talented.
This week's songs:
All I Want Is You - U2
What's Up - 4 Non-Blondes (warning: goggles on tophat)
Week 5 Sheet Music [pdf]
Thao is an inspiration for me. She is a self-taught guitarist and makes very catchy songs. She just performed at the Treasure Island Music Fest a couple of weeks ago. The last I heard she is based in San Francisco so there's a good chance you can catch her performing in the city.
Here's a song she performed for NPR where she gets to show her guitar skills and her beatboxing skills (no joke).
